About Dr. Jarria

Hello, my name is Jason Paul Jarria, MD! I am a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice, serving patients throughout Washington and Oregon.

Brief biography:

I was born and raised outside of Detroit, Michigan surrounded by a large family of Indian immigrants. My upbringing taught me to value hard work, frugality, and to prioritize for the collective needs of others. These are values I continue to live by today. I attended college at the University of Michigan, studied economics, and became a devoted Michigan football fan. Instead of taking over the family business, I decided to go to medical school with plans of becoming a surgeon. However, I found a near-obsession with psychiatry and pursued residency training at OHSU in Portland, OR. After completing my training, I worked in a psychiatric hospital and intensive outpatient program, treating patients with severe and debilitating mental illness, before starting my outpatient private practice. My goal as a psychiatrist is to provide a concierge-level of mental healthcare, treat my patients with respect, and help them optimize their mental well-being.

My Approach to Mental Healthcare

  • I believe patients have autonomy in their treatment plan: my patients do not simply receive treatment — they help create the treatment plan. I believe in having discussions around treatment, offering different potential solutions, and understanding each patient’s input and preferences.
  • I believe in an accurate diagnosis: a diagnosis can never describe a person entirely, but it is critical to creating a sound treatment plan. Unfortunately, many patients are mis-diagnosed with conditions they do not have and placed on medications they do not need.
  • I believe in fewer medications: I see too many patients who have been placed on multiple unnecessary psychiatric medications with significant side effects. My approach involves both prescribing and thoughtful de-prescribing to achieve our treatment goals with the fewest medications possible.
  • I believe in non-medication treatment options: optimizing our mental health means addressing the whole person including their relationships, work satisfaction, physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep.
  • I believe in spending time with patients: my standard appointment time is 25 minutes with plenty of time to understand my patients’ situation, along with their unique needs and preferences. Patients are free to see me every month, or more frequently if needed.
